The UK is making strides towards its 2030 clean electricity target of a nearly fully clean power system by 2030, with clean sources generating 95% of Great Britain’s electricity, and its 2050 net-zero target resulting in new policies, which will shape Britain’s future.

Residential Roofs Driving Up the Numbers

The major impetus for all this growth is an upcoming solar mandate for all new-build residences in England that starts to roll out from 2027, which can save residents up to £1,000 a year. Home builders must incorporate a solar system unless they can prove it hasn’t been structurally designed for solar live loads, effectively incorporating solar into the housing market.

Making Solar More Accessible:

0% VAT on solar panel and battery installations (until March 2027) lowers the cost of entry for homeowners.

Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) allows households to earn through exporting excess power to the grid.

ECO4 & Warm Homes Plan financial support is available, and solar is available free to low-income and social housing segments.

Public Sector Solar Rollout Underway

Through Great British Energy (GBE), the government is installing solar on 200 NHS buildings and 200 schools, with completion expected by the end of 2025.

Estimated savings:

£25,000/year per school

£45,000/year per NHS establishment

These initiatives not only reduce public energy costs, they are also sustainability leaders in communities all around the country.

UK Solar Capacity Exceeds 18 GW

Between August 2024 and February 2025, the UK added 2 GW of new capacity ( the total now exceeding 18 GW). This growth aligns with the Clean Power 2030 Action Plan and newly increased funding through the CfD Round 6, which saw a 50% increased funding and supported both utility-scale projects and residential support.

Challenges on the Horizon

While the United Kingdom has made great progress, grid connection delays in some areas and a lack of workforce capacity are starting to emerge as bottlenecks.
