In a significant move towards net-zero transport, the UK government has launched its £650 million Electric Car Grant (ECG) programme. The ECG programme awards drivers upfront discounts of £1,500 on eligible electric vehicles. Citroën is the pioneer manufacturer to make the cut as the first company to qualify for the ECG, despite the government taking a while to figure all this out. The ECG programme is part of the Government’s larger strategy to build upon the £4.5 billion investment plan to help spur the uptake of EVs, investment in domestic manufacturing capability, and to build a UK charging unit network.
Effective from 5 August 2025, consumers can purchase the following models with the automatic discounts available to them immediately and without paperwork:
- Citroën ë-C3
- Citroën ë-C4
- Citroën ë-C5 Aircross
- Citroën ë-Berlingo
Although the Electric Car Grant programme and these initial EV models will likely spark other new EV models from other manufacturers, and stimulate much more activity that will impact the automobile industry as a whole all the way down to OEM’s, the manufacturers of everything that follows the EV, the design of the charging infrastructure, grid planners, urban planners, engineering service providers, etc.
What This Electric Car Grant Means for the Industry
Increase in EV Adoption
Affordability is a major obstacle to EV adoption; this grant makes EVs more competitive with internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. With more models qualifying for the Grant, we expect an influx of new EV registrations and an increase in demand for scalable infrastructure and charging.
Increase in Charging Infrastructure
The government reported a 27 per cent increase in public charge points in the last year, adding over 17,300 new chargers. The final total of charge points exceeds 82,000, with a target of greater than 100,000 charge points coming up. This growing level of Infrastructure assumes a level of expertise in designing EV charging site plans, grid load assessment, GIS network planning, and urban integration — this is where Finulent Solutions has specialised technical expertise.
Sustainability Standards in Vehicle Design
The Electric Car Grant incentivises manufacturers meeting stringent sustainability standards, continuing an industry-wide trend of embedding ecological efficiency and circularity into the design, engineering and manufacturing processes. This will likely alter how we work with design consultants, including methods of reporting on sustainability and compliance.
Job Creation & Sector Confidence
This mechanism, along with the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, not only supports motorists but also engenders the UK’s EV ecosystem – from R&D to deployment.
A global engineering partner for EV Charging Design, with innovative planning and smart mobility, Finulent Solutions is in alignment with this progress, eager to assist OEMs, charge point operators, utilities, and governments to ensure the EV transition is easier, smarter, and sustainable.
